His show

Room Elephant creates live, improvised electronic music that responds to the performance space. Anthony Appleby is a multi-instrumentalist (trumpet, keys, vocals, electronic beats and loops). His performances combine prepared sound clips with live electronic and acoustic instruments. His improvised performances consist of layering audio clips and loops with soft synths, hardware, and acoustic instruments on a bed of audio clips.

His music resists genre delineation: now jazz; now techno; now ambient; now spoken word. Instead, he explores sonic textures and beats with curiosity and joy. He responds to the energy of the room. In this way, the performance is a co-creation with the audience. The purpose of Room Elephant performances is to authentically be in the moment and love the sound being created!

Medium Biography and description

Room Elephant (Anthony Appleby) creates live, improvised electronic music. He combines prepared sound clips with trumpet, synths, and vocals to create a truly unique performance. Coming from a Jam Band background (Appleman Collective: 2006-2017, Sound Mind: 2017-2020), improvisation and spontaneous creation are hallmarks of his shows. Aesthetically, the music is informed by jazz, blues, and Tech-house music.

Long bio and description

Room Elephant is Anthony Appleby (he/ him), a multi-instrumentalist who is fascinated with music in all its forms. Past projects include house band for the Collaboratorium at Freezer Burn (2019), Kit and Kaboodle Circus writer, producer, performer: 2011, 2013, 2015), Appleman Collective (original, accordion led folk rock band: 2006-2017) Sound Mind (2017-2020). A long-time organizer, he is a current board member of the Oscill8 collective, which supports new and established live electronic music producers.

His current project, Room Elephant, creates live, improvised electronic music. He combines prepared sound clips with live electronic and acoustic instruments. He uses soft synths, hardware, and acoustic instruments like voice, trumpet and percussion to create music that responds to the room.

His performances combine clips, tone and beats with curiosity and joy. No two shows are alike. The purpose of Room Elephant performances is to truly be in the moment and love the sound you're hearing!  

Tech Requirements

  • My gear fits on one piano keyboard stand.

  • I require about 2 m by 2m space.

  • I need power and my audio out is 2 quarter inch or RCA plugs (L & R).

  • If possible, a clean mic to PA is also nice to have.
